before I finally bought myself a Ford Escape, I often went home with my coworker bcs we lived in the same building. He bought a new Escape in 2019, it's 89K miles now

For the last 25K miles or so, the car's transmission kind of shakes or stutters when my friend was driving at a steady speed in the highest gear and going up a small hill.

Sometimes, it even suddenly shifts down to a lower gear pretty hard.

If he gives the car just a little bit more gas, it shifts down smoothly to a lower gear.

He's planning to take it to the dealership and get the transmission fluid changed (for the third time) and a full transmission flush.

Does anyone have any other ideas or suggestions about what might be going on?

The torque converter or shift solenoids could be worth checking. Has the fluid ever shown signs of burning or debris?

It could be a weak battery, it might be having a harder time sending a strong signal in colder conditions. At the back of my head, could be a software glitch too
