Grinding noise, but still kicking

My 2014 Escape grinds randomly, even after chilling at the light. It squeals its way through every gear like it's plotting revenge. Shifting's fine, manual works, but it feels like it's gearing up to surprise me. What's the story here?

This could mean a lot of things and those things are not good. Stop driving that car and bring it to the mechanic ASAP!

hmm, even if it shifts fine, you're likely looking at early signs of a serious issue, maybe transmission, torque converter, or CV joints probably but don't wait for it to fail, you should get it looked at

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I'll hold off driving until a mechanic takes a close look. From the transmission to the torque converter and CV joints, catching these issues early is better than waiting for a costly surprise.

Took the Escape to a transmission specialist, confirmed the clutch assembly was on its way out. Turns out that the fluid was also low and had picked up some debris which didn't help matters. They replaced the clutch kit and flushed the transmission fluid and so far, it's shifting smoother than ever. Guess it wasn't plotting revenge after all.
